Client education

Read this before choosing Air Freight.

This guide explains how air freight works in plain language, what clients should prepare, and what can affect cost, speed or delivery reliability.

What air freight is best for

Air freight is the fastest way to move international cargo when time, product value or production urgency justifies the premium. It is often used for medical products, electronics, spare parts, samples, fashion launches, perishable goods and emergency replenishment.

Actual weight vs. volumetric weight

Airlines charge by the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight. A light but large box can cost more than expected because it occupies aircraft space. ShipHub calculates chargeable weight automatically so clients understand the real quote before booking.

Express, standard and charter

Express uses the fastest available routing, standard balances cost and speed, and charter reserves aircraft capacity for urgent, oversized or mission-critical freight. IKEOCEAN helps clients choose the level that matches the deadline without overpaying.

Airport-to-airport vs. door-to-door

Airport-to-airport covers the flight leg only, while door-to-door includes pickup, export handling, customs, airline movement, import clearance and final delivery. Many clients need door-to-door to avoid hidden handoffs.

How it works

From quote to delivery — step by step.

01

Quote your cargo

Enter origin airport, destination, weight, dimensions and service level (express/standard/economy).

02

Choose your routing

See direct vs. transit options with door-to-door transit times from 24h to 5 days.

03

Book and tender

Confirm, generate the Air Waybill (AWB) and we tender to the airline at the right terminal.

04

Track flight-by-flight

Live AWB tracking, flight departure, transfer, and customs clearance milestones.

05

Delivery

Same-day or next-day delivery from destination airport to consignee door.

Real-world example

Example: Frankfurt → New York · 320kg pharma shipment

A pharmaceutical company needs to move 320kg of temperature-controlled vaccines (2–8°C) from Frankfurt to JFK within 36 hours. They quote it on ShipHub, select Lufthansa Cargo's td.Pharma service at €4.85/kg, book and tender same day. The shipment is tracked from FRA cold storage → flight LH400 → JFK pharma facility → refrigerated delivery to the consignee in New Jersey — arriving in 31 hours with full temperature logs.

Before you request a quote

Information to prepare

  • Pickup and delivery address or airport codes
  • Piece count, dimensions and actual weight
  • Commodity description, value and HS code if known
  • Deadline or required delivery date
  • Temperature, DG or security requirements
  • Commercial invoice and packing list

Heads up

What clients should know

  • Airlines charge by actual or dimensional weight, whichever is higher.
  • Lithium batteries, liquids, chemicals and medical goods may require extra declarations.
  • Customs can still delay urgent air cargo if documents are incomplete.
  • Weekend and holiday cutoffs can affect same-day uplift.
  • Charter quotes depend heavily on aircraft availability and positioning.
